A Very Short History of Wokingham

The first written record appears of “Sonning, with Dunsden and Wokingham” when it is owned by the Bishop of Salisbury.

1219

Bishop Richard Poore applies for a ‘new town’ at Wokingham to boost income. He builds more homes and is granted a charter to hold a weekly market.

1259

The town gains further rights to hold fairs on St. Barnabas’ Day and All Saints’ Day, bringing more trade and celebrations to the town.

A guildhall is built as a focal point for local commerce.

1643 – 1645

During the Civil War, the town is raided, first by Parliamentarian troops and then the Royalists. Both armies set light to homes and businesses.

1675

The gallant French highwayman, Claude Duval owns a cottage in Highwater Lane, he's eventually caught and executed at Tyburn, London.

Charles Beauclerk the first Duke of St Albans, is appointed High Steward of Wokingham. Beauclerk is the illegitimate son of King Charles ll and his mistress, the actress Nell Gwynn.

1723

Parliament passes a law to prevent ‘blacking’, disguising one's face by painting it black, in order to commit crime. 32 members of the 'Wokingham Blacks' gang are rounded up and sent to London to stand trial.

1787

Prize fighter Tom Johnson “bashed the living daylights” out of Bill Warr for the Championship of England and a purse of £200.

Wokingham’s cricket club is formed.

1845

Having been split between the counties of Wiltshire and Berkshire (partly due to the Bishops of Salisbury owning much of the town), Wokingham officially becomes exclusively Berkshire.

1912

The Electric Theatre cinema opens its doors, later becoming The Savoy, which and closing in 1950.
