1086

The Domesday Book describes records what is a small hamlet.

1284

A simple wooden bridge is used by monks to cross the river Wey.

Construction of St .Nicholas, a small medieval church, is completed. It would later by replaced in 1849 by St James.

A census records a population of 930.

1838

The first trainstation is built.

A Martian space craft lands in suburbia before being destroyed in HG Wells’ War of the Worlds.

1900

Thanks to the railway, wealthy merchants move to the growing town and commute into London. The population passes 5,000.

1907

The world’s first purpose-built racing circuit is built at nearby Brooklands.

Brooklands is once again at the forefront, when it helps with testing for the Wellington bomber and the Hurricane fighter.
