A Quick History of Wembley

Wemba lea is first mentioned in a charter.

1547

Records show there are just six houses at this time.

1661

The village now has 9 larger homes, 23 small cottages and a population of 160.

The population rises to 444.

1892

Sir Edward Watkins starts building Wembley Park, a huge recreational site for Londoners.

The park includes ‘Watkins’ Folly’, his attempt to out-shine the Eifel Tower. It’s pulled down in 1907.

The park’s grand opening includes a new station on the Metropolitan line to bring visitors.

1922

In January work begins on the new Empire Stadium (later renamed Wembley) which is completed in just 300 days.

An estimated 210,000 fans watch the Cup Final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United.

1934

The Empire Pool is built for the second Empire (Commonwealth) Games, it’s later transformed into an entertainment venue, Wembley Arena.

An estimated 9,000 bombs fall on the area during WWII.

1985

Live Aid brings the eyes of the world on the stadium again. The legendary charity gig reaches 1.9 billion viewers.

After the old stadium is demolished in 2002, it takes 4 years to build the new ‘home of football’.
