A Roman settlement builds up alongside a Roman road running to Alchester, crossing the Thames at Oxford.

King Aethelwulf of Wessex fathers a fifth child, the future Alfred the Great.

1246

Henry III grants a charter for a market bringing important trade to the town.

Alice Fitzwarin is born, daughter of Ivo Fitzwarin, lord of the manor. Years later, Ivo takes in an orphan named Dick to work at his London shop. Dick Whittington later marries Alice before becoming Lord mayor of London.

1597

The Norman chapel of St. Mary is converted to be used as a grammar school. Today the site is occupied by King Alfred's School.

1863

Wantage & Grove Cricket Club’s first recorded match is played.

The town appears under the name of “Alfredston” in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure.
