The first signs of settlement in Theale date it back to the Bronze Age.
During the Middles Ages, gravel from local pits was used to form roadways that crossed the area allowing travel through the wetlands. This brought passing traffic that helped the town flourish.
Built in this year, the Old Lamb Inn claims to be one of the UK's most haunted pubs. According to local legend, it was also a regular watering hole for the highwayman Dick Turpin.
In September, Parliamentarian troops heading back to London were attacked by Prince Rupert's troops, during the English Civil War. Over 1,000 men were reportedly killed and buried at what was darkly named Deadman's Lane.
