A Very Short History of Sutton
43 - 70 CE
A settlement appears beside the Roman road, Stane Street.
7th Century
In the first written record, the manor of Sudtone is given to the wealthy Chertsey Abbey.
1086
Sudtone is listed in the Domesday Book.
1538
Having abolished the abbey, Henry VIII grants the manor to Sir Nicholas Carew of Beddington.
1539
After having Sir Nicolas executed for treason, Henry takes back the manor.
1760
A stagecoach service begins running between London and Brighton, stopping at the Cock Hotel.
1847
The first rail station opens.
1852
A residential school is opened, teaching metalwork and shoemaking for boys, and needlework and ironing to girls destined for domestic service.
1882
Sutton is made a district.
1884
Local man Thomas Dudley is convicted of cannibalism after he and his crew eat their cabin boy while cast adrift at sea.
1901
The population reaches 17,223.
1942
434 bombs are dropped on the area during WWII, causing 187 civilian casualties.
1963
Giorgio Gomelsky is so impressed by the unknown band playing at The Winning Post pub, he books them for his own club and becomes their manager. The band's name? The Rolling Stones.
1965
Becomes an official London borough.
