A Quick History of Surbiton

Reference to Subertone first appears in the written record, it comes from the old English term ‘south buritum’ or south granary.

1648

The Battle of Surbiton is one of the last battles of the English Civil War, when Lord Villiers and the Earl of Holland attempt to rescue the King before being defeated by Parliamentary troops.

1838

Surbiton station opens, accelerating the area’s growth, as wealthy merchants relocate home away from the centre of London.

Coronation Hall is opened in honour of King George V.

1940

During the Blitz, 32 high explosive bombs are dropped on Surbiton.
