A Quick History of Staines-upon-Thames

The first evidence of people moving to Staines are the Romans. They name it Ad Pontes, meaning bridge, and make it the main crossing point outside of London.

969

The first written record appears in a Saxon charter.

1009

Sweyn Forkbeard’s Viking army cross the river here.

A number of the barons and earls who sign the Magna Carta, stay in the town the night before meeting King John at Runnymede.

1218

It becomes a thriving market town, holding three annual fairs.

1222

Henry III gives a great oak from Windsor Forest to help repair the bridge.

A stone marker is placed to indicate the City of London's edge. In the 21st century, a replica will be laid.

1400s

The Blue Anchor pub is constructed and will remain open until 2006. Five of its windows were bricked up (but painted back on to keep it symmetrical) to avoid window tax.

The trial of Sir Walter Raleigh is held at Market Hall, away from London to avoid the plague. Despite questionable evidence, he is found guilty of treason and imprisoned until 1616.

Staines Boat Club is founded.

The world's first linoleum factory is opened by Staines Linoleum Company.

Planning permission is granted for the Two Rivers shopping centre.

2012

The first Staines-upon-Thames day is held to celebrate the formal name change from plain 'Staines' to distance the town from negative links to comedy character Ali G.
