A Very Short History of Royston

The first settlement grows around an Augustine Priory at the crossroads of two ancient routes; Icknield Way, dating to the Iron Age and Ermine Street built by the Romans.

1066

Roisia’s Cross, a stone monument is erected at the crossroads. The base, known as the Royse Stone, still sits in the town centre.

1213

King John grants the town a charter to hold an annual fair.

A lepers’ hospital isfounded close to Baldock Street by Richard Argentine, the Sheriff of Cambridgeshire.

1536

After Henry VIII dissolves the monasteries, the priory is given to Robert Chester, keeper of the King’s bedchamber, who turns the area into a market.

1604

King James has two inns demolished, The Cock and The Greyhound, to make way for a royal hunting lodge. He also bans anyone from taking game within 16 miles.

King James negotiates the dowry and marriage contract of his daughter, Princess Elizabeth to Frederick V, future King of Bohemia, while staying at his lodge.

1613

The King returns again bringing his son-in-law and his son, the future King Charles.

1647

Having been captured by Oliver Cromwell’s troops, King Charles is brought through the town on route to be executed in London. With no monarch, the royal lodge falls into disrepair.
