A Very Short History of Milton Keynes

2000 BCE

The first sign of people moving to Milton Keynes of settlements dates the area back to the early Bronze Age.

1967

“I remember when all this was fields…” In the case of Milton Keynes it’s any time before 1967 as the ‘New City’ didn’t exist until then. The site is chosen as it’s equidistant from London, Birmingham, Leicester and Oxford.

1978

The famous concrete cows are installed. During their lifetime they’ll be decorated, graffitied, beheaded and even kidnapped (cow-napped?).

The Peace Pagoda is erected by Buddhist Monks at Willen Lake.

1985

Britain’s first multiscreen cinema, The Point, opens its doors. The first films screened include St Elmos Fire, The Goonies and My Beautiful Laundrette.

2000

The Milton Keynes Hoard of gold jewellery, dating from the Bronze Age is discovered.

MK Dons Football Club is formed somewhat controversially having been moved from Wimbledon, dividing football fans across the country.

2015

The town is selected to host 3 Rugby World Cup matches. The city is also used to trial of autonomous cars, thanks to its American style grid road system.

2017

MK marks its 50th anniversary and another first is achieved as robot deliveries are tested by Amazon.
