The first record of Haemele appear when King Offa of the East Saxons (Essex) gives land to the Bishop of London.
1086
The Domesday Book records 23 households, 13 smallholders, 8 slaves, 4 mills and 2 Frenchmen.
1539
King Henry VIII grants a charter allowing a weekly market.
1587
Lord of the manor, the Earl of Leicester, creates common land for local people to graze animals. Grazing rights still exist to this day.
1837
The train station opens as the London and Birmingham Railway reaches the town.
1898
Queen Victoria grants a charter making Hempstead a municipal borough.
1942
The town is bombed several times by the German Luftwaffe during WWII.
1947
The Government purchases 5,910 acres of land to transform Hemel into a 'New Town' to house Londoners displaced by the blitz.
1959
Hollywood star Lauren Bacall opens the Odeon Cinema.
1973
The infamous 'magic roundabout' is created. It initially causes traffic jams and has been confusing visitors ever since.
