1294
The earliest spelling of Hamersmyth is recorded, 'myth' referring to the meeting point of two rivers.
1642
At the start of the Civil War, the royalist Earl of Essex is quartered in the area.
1656
Miles Sydencombe and his group fail to assassinate Oliver Cromwell. 5 times. Sydencombe is eventually caught and tried for treason.
1683
The Great Frost grips the Thames and a fair is held on the frozen river.
1801
The 1801 census records a population of 10,016.
1827
Hammersmith Bridge opens after three years of construction.
1863
The borough becomes home to the world's first underground train line.
1878
Influential designer William Morris and his family move to Kelmscott House.
1906
The Public Baths and Wash-Houses open in Lime Grove.
1908
The White City Stadium hosts the London Olympics. The marathon course is extended by 0.2 miles to ensure it ends in front of the King and Queen at the royal box.
