A Quick History of Fleet

1324

The first written record appears for Fleate showing costs of repairs to local waterways.

1505

Fleate Priory grant to Sir William tenancy of the pasture and fisheries in return for “100 fishes of Pikes, Tenches, Breams and Rochesy early in good and fresh state between the feasts of Easter and Pentecost”.

1567

Common grazing rights are permitted, but not near the valuable pond. “It is agreed that all tenants may graze commons therein but not in ground enclosed called the Fleate Pond.”

1600’s

The area becomes renowned for highwaymen as well as smugglers bringing goods such as brandy and lace from ships landed on Hampshire’s beaches.

1759

Fleet Pond, Fleet Farm, Broomhurst Farm and a mill are included in a map of the area drawn up by Isaac Taylor.

1829

The Enclosure Act of 1829 brings people looking for land and the population starts to rise.

1847

Fleetpond Station is built. Although there is no town to serve, London and Southampton Railway charges London day trippers to visit the pond and picturesque woodlands.

1857

Mr Charles Lefroy has All Saints Church built in memory of his late wife.

1871

The population grows from 380 in 1871 to 2,000 by 1901. Tobacco is grown commercially at Redlands estate creating more employment.

1965

The Gurkhas arrive in Fleet and remain garrisoned there for 29 years. After they leave, a statue and square are erected in their honour.

1977

American horror writer Stephen King moves to Fleet after advertising for, “Wanted, a draughty Victorian house in the country with a dark attic and creaking floorboards, preferably haunted.” King and his family move to 87 Aldershot Road where he begins work on Cujo.
