A Quick History of Dorking

9000 – 4300 BC E

The oldest trace of human life in Dorking are flint tools, dating the first residents to the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

3300 – 1200 BCE

Groundworks for a new supermarket in 2013 uncover evidence of a Bronze Age settlement.

1086

At the time of the Domesday Book, Dorchinges consists of 38 villagers, 14 smallholders, 4 slaves,4 mills and a church.

John Aubrey describes the town as being “the greatest… for poultry in England”. The Dorking Hen is still the town’s emblem.

1755

The Horsham to Epsom turnpike passes through the town.

1830

In November, a riot breaks out with a mob of around 80 people, protesting against the lack of work. Mounted soldiers from the Life Guards are called in to quell the uprising.
