The area around Park Lane is used as a pagan burial site.
871
The earliest written record of Crogdene detail a land deal between Duke Aelfred and Archbishop Aethelred of Canterbury.
1086
The Domesday Booklists Croindene as being home to 73 families, 48 villagers, 25 smallholders, a mill and a church.
1276
The town is granted a charter to hold a market by King Edward I. The market is still running today.
1596
Queen Elizabeth I grants Archbishop John Whitgift a charter to build a hospital and a school.
1801
In the first census, the population is recorded at 5,743.
1805
Croydon, Merstham & Godstone Iron Railway opens, using horse-drawn freight.
1859
The Theatre Royal opens its doors.

A workhouse opens on Queen’s Road to house the poor.
1881
The 1881 census lists a population of 78,947.

Croydon Airport opens, one of the UK’s first commercial civilian airports.
