Cheshunt is founded on Ermine Street, the main Roman road between Londinium (London) and the north.

894

King Alfred the Great digs ditches to drain the River Lea to prevent Viking boats heading north.

1146

The church of St Mary the Virgin is recorded in a charter. Having been rebuilt in 1418, it remains one of the town's oldest buildings.

Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth I comes to live Theobalds Palace for the first time. She will spend time living at the house and visit on several occasions in later years.

1625

King James dies at Theobalds on the 27th of March.

1712

Richard Cromwell, son of Oliver Cromwell and the second Lord Protector, dies in Cheshunt in 1712. He'd made the town his home having returned from France.

A US Air Force bomber of the 392 Bombardment Group crashes near Maxwell's Farm, just outside the town, killing all 10 crew members.

1952

Tottenham Hotspur FC build a new training ground in Brookfield Lane in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Today they train at Hotspurs Way in nearby Enfield.

1957

Plans are scrapped to make the town a London borough along with Enfield.

The Cheshunt and Hoddesdon merge to form the Borough of Broxbourne.

Tesco close their head office having been located in the town since the 1970s.
