A Quick History of Camberley

1600’s

The turnpike road that runs through this part of Bagshot Heath becomes infamous as a hunting ground for Highwaymen, such as Moll Frith, The Golden Farmer and Dick Turpin.

1726

The writer Daniel Defoe describes the area as, “…horrid and frightful to look on, not only good for little, but good for nothing”.

1802

The arrival of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst sees an expansion in homes, and the settlement “New Town” is established.

New Town is renamed Yorktown in honour of Prince Frederick, the Duke of York.

1859

Landowner Captain Knight begins to develop Cambridge Town along the London Road, building the Cambridge Hotel, which opens in 1862.

1877

Due to confusion with the city of Cambridge, the town is renamed again, ‘Camberley’ is officially used from the January 15.
