A Very Short History of Bracknell

Bronze Age

The earliest signs of Bracknell life is a Bronze Age burial mound close to where Rectory Lane now stands.

40AD

The Romans build the Devil's Highway, from London to Silchester, passing through but not stopping in Bracknell (which doesn't actually exist yet).

942

The first written record of Bracknell appears in a boundary charter. At this point it's a simple village within the vast Great Windsor Forest.

1642 - 1651

As civil war grips the nation, Bracknell is largely ignored, neither side set up camp, but both sets of troops occasionally pillage the area looking for food.

1700's

Highwaymen bring more law and disorder, Moll Cutpurse, James MacLaine 'The Gentleman Highwayman', and Dick Turpin all reportedly plied their trade in the area.

A battle takes place when the Grenadier Guards are called in to subdue a local gang of robbers known as the Wokingham Blacks. The gang, who would hide their faces with mud, were all caught and many hanged.

1856

Bracknell Train Stations opens its doors. This created rapid growth and by 1870 the town started holding a weekly cattle and poultry market.

1949

Bracknell is designated a New Town, to help home Londoners displaced by bombing in WWII. The first new residents move into a development in Priestwood on Christmas Eve 1951.

Queen Elizabeth II pays her first visit to the town. HRH returned in 1978 to officially open the Royal Meteorological Society's headquarters.

Abingdon moves house, kind of. Its location is redesignated as it becomes part of Oxfordshire.

Following the arrival of Waitrose in 2011, the Lexicon centre opens with shops, a cinema and dining.
