A Very Short History of Ascot
Iron Age
The first settlers arrive and start moving to Ascot.
1086
Ascoten, its citizens, homes and valuables are recorded in the Domesday book. The town has three whole cows!
1470
Ascot is immortalised as Astolat in Sir Thomas Malory's King Arthur chronicle, Le Morted 'Arthur.
1711
Queen Anne comes up with a racy idea and opens Ascot Racetrack.
1739
Parliament rule that all horses running at Ascot must stay at a "public house no more than three miles away from the course".
1750's
Highwaymen bring their horses to prowl the road to London, including the infamous Dick Turpin.
1856
The first railway arrives as Ascot & Sunninghill Station opens. We can neither confirm nor deny whether the first train arrived on time.
1943
Large areas of the racecourse are commandeered by the army to help with the war effort.
1969
John Lennon and Yoko Ono buy Tittenhurst Park mansion from Peter Cadbury, heir to the chocolate company.
