Agmodesham first appears in the records as an Anglo-Saxon settlement.

1086

The Domesday Book records Elmodesham as having 14 villagers, 4 smallholders, 7 slaves and 400 pigs.

1200

Geoffrey de Mandeville, obtains a charter, allowing him to hold a market every Friday and a fair on the 7th and 8th September.

The Fraternity of St Katherine is established by the most important burgers and traders to support its members during times of hardship.

William Tylsworth is put on trial for heresy as a Lollard. He’s sentenced to be burnt at the stake in the high street and his daughter forced to light the pyre.

John Leland, the Tudor historian describes Amersham as “a right pretty market [town] of one street well built with timber”.

Another charter is granted to Edward, Earl of Bedford, changing the market day to Tuesday, and a new fair to be held on the 19th of September.

Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell moves his family to Woodrow High House during the Civil War. He regularly passes through the town, sometimes visiting The Griffin Inn.

Local MP Captain Thomas Tyrwhitt Drake presents petitions to parliament from Amersham citizens for the abolition of slavery.

Having played a notable part in the suffrage movement, Henrietta Busk is elected as the first woman on Amersham Rural District Council.

Amersham Maternity Hospital is established for mothers escaping the dangers of the Blitz in London. Over 5,000 children are born during this time.
