A Very Short History of Abingdon

1200 – 600 BCE

During the Iron Age a defensive wall is built around a settlement created by possibly the first people to move to Abingdon.

676

The first abbey is built by Benedictine monks, giving the town its name.

1084

William the Conqueror spends Easter at the abbey.

The Abbot refuses to back down in a dispute over grazing rights. In retaliation, the townsfolk steal all his cows.

1327

Unhappy with the Abbey's taxes, the townsfolk revolt. The monks fight back, taking locals hostage. The mayor of Oxford arrives, bringing more people to join the mob, who burn down Abbey buildings. When the Abbot returns with King's troops, 80 people are arrested and 12 hung.

1416

The first stone bridge is built over this stretch of the Thames.

After the abbey is dissolved, the town is granted its first royal charter and becomes the county town of Berkshire.

The County Hall is built, holding a court on the first floor and market hall below.

Morland Brewery opens and starts producing Old Speckled Hen.
